Defining the Internet

The Internet is a large collection of computers all over the world that are connected to one another in various ways.  Of all the technological developments of this century, the net is perhaps the most amazing.  You can use the Internet to communicate with other people throughout the world; read online versions of newspapers, magazines, academic journals and books; join discussion groups on almost any conceivable topic.  A good web page starts with a good design.

The first major consideration when building a website is to commit to making it a useable web site.  Decide what information that you are posting is useable and brainstorm ways to build the site so that it highlights that useable quality.  Preparing a design involves making decisions about what styles (font, colors, etc…) and illustrations (images, pictures, etc…) to arrange the web page.  The people who do this work are graphic designers.  Here are some things to consider when designing a web page.

  1. Audience – Who will see the final product?
  2. Content – What message are the words and graphics trying to represent?
  3. Size – How big will the finished product be?
  4. Budget – Some designs cost more to produce? (logos)
  5. Principles of design – What looks good?
